Sports Chiropractic

Chiropractors have been involved in the treatment of sports people and sports-related injuries from the very beginning of the profession. As a discipline that deals with functional disorders of the joints it is eminently suited to being included as part of the medical back-up team of any sport.

Prevent injury & optimise performance

Chiropractors’ are not just concerned with the treatment of sports-related injuries but in how to prevent them in the first place and how to help optimise performance. It is possible that a person can have a mechanical dysfunction without being aware of any clinical symptoms. If that is the case then not only will they be prone to injury when applying that extra bit of effort but as they are not functioning correctly then they cannot perform to their maximum capability.

“...seeing a chiropractor on a regular basis has made me a better golfer. I've been going to chiropractors for as long as I can remember. It's as important to my training as practicing my swing.”

~Tiger Woods ~ 14 time PGA Championship Golfer

The International Federation of Sports Chiropractic / Fédération Internationale de Chiropratique du Sport (FICS) is comprised of national chiropractic sports councils worldwide and individual members, and has affiliations with international organisations within the chiropractic profession and the world of sports.

One of FICS' primary objectives is promoting high standards of

education and practice in sports chiropractic worldwide, in part

through the development of postgraduate sports chiropractic

programs. FICS’ offers the International Chiropractic Sports

Science Diploma, which I attended in September 2010,

in the olympic town of Lausanne in Switzerland. (far right of

Chiropractors’ in elite sport

For the first time ever at an Olympic and Paralympic Games, chiropractic care was offered to athletes as one of the London 2012 core services. A huge team of chiropractors were based at the Physical Therapies Department within the London Olympics medical centre and worked as part of a multi-disciplinary team in the polyclinic. In addition many countries sent their own team chiropractors, with the US team alone sending over 100 chiropractors to treat their athletes.

In the run up to the Games Usain Bolt received chiropractic treatment to recover from his back injury and Tour de France winner and multiple Olympic champion, Bradley Wiggins, has been having treatment since 2008. In fact, at least 90% of elite athletes use chiropractic on a regular basis to prevent injuries and to improve their performance.

Chiropractor, Jean-Pierre Meersemann, has been in charge of the Milan Lab, the medical department at AC Milan for over twenty years.

Paul Cheung is team chiropractor for Red Bull Racing Formula 1 team.
